The Discovery Channel nutjob was just that—a nutjob.

Lord have mercy. These days, a man can’t even strap on a bunch of explosives, take a network building hostage, and get himself shot dead by police without touching off a partisan slap fest.
Before I fired up my computer this morning, I assumed that conservative partisans would have been busy little beavers during the night. Sure enough, not one but two e-mails awaited me, crowing about James Lee’s environmental extremism. Since then, I’ve run across plenty more Web posts with headlines dubbing Lee a “Violent Liberal Environmentalist” or a “Liberal Ecoterrorist” or otherwise crowing about his not-a-conservative status.
I was more surprised, I confess, by a post at the liberal blog Think Progress, detailing how Lee’s online manifesto “Echoes Anti-immigrant Groups’ Malthusian Screed,” then walking readers through the sinister phenomenon of nativism’s greenwashing. It’s not that I think liberals are necessarily above that sort of opportunistic bashing. But linking Lee’s behavior to an ugly right-wing ideology took considerably more creativity and chutzpah than the right’s gloating about Lee’s fondness for An Inconvenient Truth.
So, if we were forced to pick sides between James J. Lee: left-wing enviroradical and James Lee: militant right-wing nativist, the data points favor Option A.
But, to state the obvious, we’re not forced to pick sides. Lee wasn’t an ideologue driven by his own political extremism to do something drastic. He was, first and foremost, batshit crazy. We’re talking about someone who so lost touch with reality that he thought the best way to save the planet was to force a television network to run game shows promoting the ideals of “human sterilization and infertility.” (Can’t you just envision the “Jeopardy” spin-off? Thanks so much, Alex! I’ll take chemical castration for $400.)
Far from any sort of winger—left or right—Lee was a deeply messed up guy who lost his job, spent some time homeless, and suffered deaths in the family that, his brother-in-law told Fox News, turned him into a “darker type of character.” Unable to pull himself together, he sank into a pit of sociopathic despair that made him simultaneously loathe his own species and believe that the road to salvation lay in a better grade of cable programming.
Indeed, by the time Lee grabbed his guns and his homemade bombs and wandered into the lobby of the Discovery Channel building, he clearly had no clue what it was he was really after. As Montgomery County Police Chief J. Thomas Manger told CNN, "At times during the negotiations, he was calm, but I wouldn't call him lucid. The conversation was indicative to me he was dealing with some mental issues.”
Ya think?
Like all good ideological warriors, I’m happy to throw around the terms right-wing nutter and left-wing nutter early and often. But one case where I think they should be more conservatively applied (no pun intended) is when we’re talking about people who are literally—as opposed to figuratively, functionally, or strategically—nuts. As a political bludgeon, Lee doesn’t even rise to the level of James W. vonn Brunn, the elderly, paranoid anti-Semite who shot up the Holocaust Museum, or of Fort Hood shooter Nidal Malik Hasan. In both those cases, you can argue endlessly about the degree to which the mentally ill perpetrator’s actions were influenced by his swimming in a toxic sea of like-minded haters. But Lee wasn’t part of some broader community whose goal it is to wipe humanity from the face of the earth. As far as we can tell, no one listened to his rantings or swapped conspiracy theories with him. He was a lone crazy who had to actually pay homeless people to take part in his protests.
Admittedly, it’s hard to pass up an opportunity to score points for your political team by trying to wrap every disturbed individual to come down the turnpike around the opposition’s neck. But, no matter our affiliation, we need to be able to recognize real insanity when we see it.
Sometimes, a nut is just a nut.

Sarah Palin Profile Reveals Her Facebook Ghostwriter And Spendthrift Ways

She's earned $13 million since the 2008 presidential race that shoved her onto the national stage, but Sarah Palin apparently is a crappy tipper. A new Vanity Fair profile of the former Alaska governor paints a picture of a woman who has skyrocketed to success -- stepping on staff, friends and family along the way -- but who is so deeply concerned about controlling her public persona that she hired a friendly blogger to write her much-ballyhooed Facebook posts.
The wide-ranging profile documents hotels where Palin stiffed bellhops; her demands during the presidential campaign and on her busy speaking circuit; tensions with residents in her home town; and Palin's fashion preferences (and includes a sidebar with more details on the RNC clothing flap) -- up to and including mentioning her use of Spanx and push-up bras. But after the more salacious details, Vanity Fair writer Michael Joseph Gross also drops strong suggestions there's something fishy with some of the political action committees paying Palin to boost candidates across the country -- but he doesn't quite nail it down.
This line from the profile sums up the theme of the piece:
A onetime gubernatorial aide to Palin says, "The people who have worked for her--they're broken, used, stepped on, down in the dust."
The most fascinating nuggets from the piece explore the many consultants Palin has paid to sharpen her image and help her as she (maybe) explores a 2012 White House bid. TPM took a close look at her spending this summer and found Palin spent nearly $400,000 on consultants, lobbying firms and the standard direct mail and fundraising firms politicians frequently use just in the second quarter.
Our piece detailed that Palin paid $22,000 to Rebecca Mansour's Aries Petra Consulting for "internet messaging," also known as posting on the Palin Facebook page. Previously identified by Politico as a "Los Angeles screenwriter and political neophyte whose creation of the popular cheerleading blog Conservatives4Palin (C4P) endeared her to Palin's inner circle," Mansour is described by Vanity Fair as "Palin's most unconventional hire."
From the profile:
After Mansour's voice disappeared on C4P [by mid-August 2009], however, Palin's voice on Facebook and Twitter started sounding increasingly provocative and irascible. A company called Aries Petra Consulting was formed in September and registered to Mansour's home address, but under someone else's name. (In astrology, Aries is the ram--or "RAM.") SarahPAC's first payment to the firm was made in October, about two weeks before Palin began her book tour. By then, Palin's new virtual voice was growing in intensity. The more shrill it became, the more news Palin made...
Mansour's work for the campaign only became public in February 2010 with SarahPAC's quarterly disclosures; the day before the disclosures were filed, C4P announced that Mansour and another founder had gone to work for SarahPAC the previous year. Mansour denies that she writes Palin's Facebook posts or Twitter feed, telling a reporter that "anything that goes out under [Palin's] name is hers."
Gross sees a pattern in the many firms with Palin affiliations that use the name "NorthStar," including Jason Recher's NorthStar Strategies:
Palin's rooms in Wichita were booked by NorthStar Strategies, a Virginia company registered to Jason Recher. When a man in Wichita asked Palin how he could get involved if she decides to run for president, Doug McMarlin offered him a business card identifying himself as a partner in NorthStar. An Amazon.com store called the North Star Group, maintained by a Palin blogger, "sells Governor Palin's books, and numerous products she has referenced or is known to use," such as the red Naughty Monkey Double Dare pumps she often wears. As a side project to Conservatives4Palin, Joseph Russo in 2009 contributed to a separate pro-Palin blog called Fist of the North Star. The blog shares its name with a Japanese manga series set in a post-apocalyptic world devastated by nuclear war, in which a faithful remnant work to save their Heavenly Empress, who has been imprisoned by the corrupt Imperial Army.
Palin can afford the expensive consultants, given she's being paid $2 million for the TLC Network show "Sarah Palin's Alaska" and a nice advance for her new book, America by Heart: Reflections on Family, Faith, and Flag. But Gross found that, despite her new-found fortune, she didn't show much in the way of largess to the working class folks that weren't explicitly fans: she tipped the bellhop in Wichita only $5 for seven bags, and didn't tip another one at all, despite arriving with ten bags well after midnight. And none of the maids at either hotel received tips. Palin did, however, give a $100 bill to a St. Joseph, Michigan chocolate store owner who sent her a care package -- in front of fans and a few press people.
But most in need of a deeper look are the details Gross has uncovered about the political action committees who have brought Palin into their fold for speeches and endorsement events:
The Winning America Back conference [in Independence, Missouri] was organized by a Missouri political-action committee called Preserving American Liberty (PAL-PAC). The group's Web site states that "Members of Preserving American Liberty are from the Kansas City metropolitan area and are all unpaid volunteers who want to make a positive difference in the community." Yet when I asked local politicians (including state representatives, a Senate candidate, and a congressional candidate) and local journalists about who had organized the event, I found that they knew nothing about the sponsors--"maybe because they're Tea Partiers," one reporter guessed, "and they're all new to politics."
PAL-PAC was seemingly formed strictly to pay for the Palin speech, Gross writes, noting that the speech and the existence of the group were announced at the same time and the website became a shell shortly after Palin left town. The group's financial disclosures show that it had little money before the event and thereafter reimbursed two area doctors more than $140,000 for expenses related to the event -- including $126,000 in speaker fees.
Gross documents similar organizations that sprung up around Palin's speeches and then disappeared, including a group in Dallas that hosted Palin for an apparent pro-life speech and claimed to be a 501(c)(3) but never registered as one and disappeared once the speech was over; and a group in North Carolina that announced its own existence and that Sarah Palin was coming to speak at its event at the same time. The latter event never materialized.
Gross notes that one of the people on the SarahPAC payroll is Timothy Crawford, the former interim finance director of the Republican National Committee who is under investigation by Ohio Secretary of State Jennifer Brunner (D) for the murky financing behind Let Ohio Vote. State laws prohibit political organizations from concealing the source of their funding; Let Ohio Vote was backrolled by Crawford's Virginia-based New Models, a non-profit that hasn't disclosed its donors despite a subpoena from Ohio.

Stuff Kevin Wrote: The oil spill, dont let them get your goat..........Mr President

Obama and the oil spill…………………
The oil spill simply disgusted me……….it is a nightmare, that has caused me to lose sleep.
However, as usual the news media is firing up another of its tag lines.
Is this Obama Katrina
Is this Obama undoing.
On and on and on
A brilliant leader that we have as president drives the public
Alternatively, what the news media has selected as the public crazy
Head lines
Jim Carville, screams out
Who cares what Jim Carville says, he is a hold over from another time, and I still cant understand a damn thing he says.
They want Obama to bleed, to cry to do a bill Clinton moment
What is that?
They want him to jump to hoops
see the problem here is that America thought that it was getting another spirit animal
Another black television judge, Nanny or mammy that would sit and wring his hands shouting Out
oh lord lord
Instead they got some one who thinks and hasn’t fallen into the trap of what they perceive, A black man as president should act like
I said it from the beginning
America has never had a honest discussion about race
It doesn’t understand black culture, or how black guys, with sense act in public
This man has taken  the weight of the world on his shoulders, he has more stuff going on than any human being should..be able to handle
But still they cry  why cant he be emotional
Why cant he cry
he doesnt have time........fools
They are even calling for him to act like bush did
When he grabbed the bull horn and shouted from atop of the ruins of the world trade center
listen to that moment again.....watch that fools blunder into a statement that is going down in history

The news media on both sides of the isle, are now vying for a bigger audience
Fox news is winning and people like Anderson cooper, who I used to greatly admire, Have turned to digging for and making negative news about current events, To further their audience
Anderson cooper has turned into a shrieking queen
I cant stand him
and  thank god they got rid of Campbell brown she  was a disaster
and what the hell was wrong with her mouth.........
If it wasn’t for Kandy and wolf I would flee cnn screaming
Where was I
America wants a minstrel show of this president
They want to see him break down and become human
Because they didn’t see him as human from the beginning
Because they still cant see what he is or the treasure that they got
Sarah palin is right about one thing
America waits for the gotcha moment
And if it doesn’t happen, they invent it
and who the hell still says gotcha or lamestream
that silly woman sees herself as annie okley
when in fact she is more like calimidy jane
I knew when Obama got elected that America had set him up, To take the fall for all of its right wing mess
Why are republicans not bitching more?
Oil companies are a republican invention
And had the president taken over the spill
Including the cost
They would be whining about that
This man can do no right in the eyes of America
In addition, people like Jim Carville
That hillbilly has been waiting to show his true colors, For a year and a half
Just Watch John McCain’s face when he looks at Obama, It says it all
America
 He they
Want it country back
America wants those illegal’s back across the line
Blacks back in their places
You know what
America deserved George bush
We like our presidents stupid
American likes dumb people
thats why our kids are beat up when they are smart
smart bothers americans
Obama disturbs America
Because intelligence troubles this  country, That has just become
A new organizations sound bit
I am so sick of the news media
Ok I admit
Some times when I watch republicans attack the president
I wish he would show up in a white tee shirt, with sagging jeans
Look them in the eye and say
Ill bitch slap you if you say that to me again
I admit it
every time I see the president with that old fossil John McCain
I wish he would just tell him,
I will beat your old crusty ass back to Arizona, If you don’t get out of my face
But then
As every black man knows
They would say
Damn those black people got anger issues
dman what happened to a thing called culture, class
Can you imagine George bush handling all of this
can you visualize it at all
Our president cant win
Well that isn’t quite right,
he is winning
That’s why America is so upset
Dont let them get your goat Mr Prez

New revelations in "The Candidate" about Elizabeth Edwards.

Elizabeth Edwards, American Medusa

John Edwards abused his loyal aide Andrew Young beyond reason, making him play gopher during his affair with Rielle Hunter and then convincing him to say the baby was his. And still, in his new tell-all book The Candidate, Young is apparently harder on Elizabeth than he is on John. Young is filled with “rancor” toward Elizabeth, one early account says. He paints her as “obsessive” and “paranoid,” a micro-manager who fired staff for petty reasons, held grudges, and constantly left furious voice mails on Young’s wife’s cell phone calling Young a liar and cheater and Hunter a "completely crazy, desperate, pathetic woman."

You don’t have to be psychic to read the tea leaves. Be afraid, be very afraid.

It does not take a pollster, partisan or psychic to see a harbinger of things to come in Massachusetts voters’ choice of a Republican to fill Ted Kennedy’s Senate seat. If Barack Obama’s next three years in the White House are anything like his first, he will surely be a one-term president.

And for black America, that’s the good news.

Because if history is any guide, the truly awful news is that the smart money is on Sarah Palin to replace Obama in the White House.

Foreshadowing a Palin presidency is a perfect, gathering storm of economics, politics and tribalism, which is not to suggest that Obama is an innocent bystander in his reversal of fortune. It is certainly true that he inherited a capsized economy. But his administration has done little to right the ship. And no president can survive double-digit unemployment and 30,000 foreclosures a month for long.

“But what about Ronald Reagan,” the skeptics are no doubt asking now, “who was saddled with a deep recession in his first term, yet bounced back to win reelection in a landslide?” The difference is epic: Reagan’s poor-performing economy was stalled; Obama’s is broken, and despite all the sanguine media talk of a recovery, the crisis shows no signs of abating anytime soon.

Elizabeth Edwards allegedly leaving John

These are the kind fo allegations you kind of hope are true if, for no other reason, they would bring logical closure to a rather tawdry affair. Over on Jezebel, it's being alleged that Elizabeth Edwards is leaving the guy a lot of people thought could be president who then proceeded to destroy that image through dirty laundry that even TMZ cringed at a little. Beyond the hype, style, and speculation, the truth is that the iPad is really just another tablet device. A really big PDA, where a touchscreen does what a laptop's keyboard used to do.

What makes the iPad so new and different, of course, is that instead of you having to find a bootleg copy of Apple's OS X operating system and install it illegally on an existing netbook or tablet PC, now you get to have a real Mac system pre-installed on a super-lightweight device that’s fully capable of running it.

For nearly five hundred years, African Americans and Native Americans have journeyed through oppression from slavery to freedom, from dispossession to sovereignty, traveling the Underground Railroad, keeping to the Good Red Road.

At times they worked in solidarity, at other times against each other, and more times than can be told, they became one another.

Racist policies structured their lives, yet communities emerged to creatively resist assimilation and violence.

Extraordinary lifeways persist; the stories must be heard. At the heart of each story survives the basic human desire for being and belonging. Out of many nations, African-Native American people are indivisible.

IndiVisible - African-Native American Lives in the Americas

Comanche family, early 1900s

Comanche family, early 1900s

Here is a family from the Comanche Nation located in southwestern Oklahoma. The elder man in Comanche traditional clothing is Ta-Ten-e-quer. His wife, Ta-Tat-ty, also wears Comanche clothing. Their niece (center) is Wife-per, also known as Frances E. Wright. Her father was a Buffalo Soldier (an African American cavalryman) who deserted and married into the Comanches. Henry (center left) and Lorenzano (center right) are the sons of Frances, who married an African American man.

Within the fabric of American identity is woven a story that has long been invisible—the lives and experiences of people who share African American and Native American ancestry.

African and Native peoples came together in the Americas. Over centuries, African Americans and Native Americans created shared histories, communities, families, and ways of life. Prejudice, laws, and twists of history have often divided them from others, yet African-Native American people were united in the struggle against slavery and dispossession, and then for self-determination and freedom.

For African-Native Americans, their double heritage is truly indivisible.

Latin American Connections and Contrasts

Throughout Latin America, African and Native peoples have interacted with each other and with white culture for centuries. As in the United States, this shared history began in slavery and discrimination. But Latin Americans defined race differently. Racial categories took into account mixed descent rather than “one drop” of African blood.

Contemporary identities take on distinctive forms. Nationality or regional culture can be as much a factor as color or biological racial origin. Cultural blends are sometimes more overt than in the U.S. because traditional practices that originated in Africa were not as consistently outlawed in Latin America, and more Native peoples live in Latin America than the U.S.

Today, African-Native American peoples in Latin America are deeply diverse. Some, like the Garifuna and Miskito, identify themselves as indigenous peoples, who speak their Native languages. Others, like the Afro-Bolivians of Yungas Province, adhere more to an African root. And many acknowledge all of the strands woven together in their complex experience.

Aidee Iriondo Alacid

Aidee Iriondo Alacid—Afro-Bolivian persistence

In the 1500s, Spaniards brought enslaved Africans to mine silver in Bolivia’s mountains. Harsh conditions and high altitude killed many; survivors were sent to plantations in the subtropical forests of the Yungas Province.

Today, Afro-Bolivians are an unrecognized ethnic minority. Their unique culture blends African and Native roots. They still elect a king based on enduring African traditions, but many speak the Native language Aymara. They have begun to press for their rights as a distinctive people, with the goal of overcoming widespread poverty and discrimination.
