Last November, Arizona Sen. John McCain "freaked out" when a Rasmussen Reports poll showed conservative challenger J.D. Hayworth within 2 points of him in the race for the GOP senate nomination, according to New York Magazine. But that was then, and now the Rocky Mountain Poll, conducted June 30-July 11 by the Behavior Research Center of Arizona, shows McCain clobbering the former talk show host.

McCain leads Hayworth by 64 percent to 19 percent with 5 percent for businessman and Navy veteran Jim Deakin. Twelve percent are undecided. The poll includes independents who say they plan to vote in the Republican primary.

Despite the showing against Hayward, McCain does not register very impressive job approval numbers among all voters, with 36 percent rating him excellent or good, 31 percent as fair and 22 percent as poor. Only 29 percent of of independents and 20 percent of Democrats give him positive marks. Forty-three percent of Republicans rate his performance as only fair or poor. The last time McCain notched 50 percent when it came to those who regarded his performance as excellent or good was in January 2007.

John McCain"Although there is little doubt that McCain will win his primary, his strong showing may not trace to him being overwhelmingly popular within the ranks of GOP voters," Behavior Research said in its analysis. "His job ratings remain soft and so it would seem a logical conclusion that many GOP voters simply see neither Deakin nor Hayworth as superior choices."

The primary is Aug. 24.

  1. There are so many reasons why McCain is killin the polls but the most important one to me is the fiscal conservative nature of the two. JD, the earmarker, the blowhard, the scam artist on an infomercial claiming free government money...or McCain, the recently voted 3rd most fiscally conservative member in Senate...
