Miraculously Curtis Francis, 12, suffered just minor cuts and doctors were able to extract the nail scissors.
Curtis, who has severe learning difficulties, had managed to reach up to a shelf where they were kept while his mum Karon was busy and put them in his mouth.
At first 50-year-old Karon Edwards thought her son had swallowed a pen lid, but he soon started coughing up blood.
The visually impaired lad made a full recovery after the scissors were taken out under anaesthetic.
Karon, from Bristol, said: "He has no sense of danger and puts most objects in his mouth."
