Stephanie Cutter, one of the Democratic Party’s most battle-tested crisis managers, will leave the White House at the end of the year to move to Chicago as a deputy manager of President Barack Obama’s reelection campaign.

Cutter, who currently has the title of deputy senior adviser, will become the deputy campaign manager overseeing communications, press, policy and research, with responsibility for managing the long-term message plan. She will be a senior member of the campaign strategy team, and a national campaign surrogate.

David Axelrod, the campaign's chief strategist, told POLITICO: "Stephanie is as talented, smart and committed as anyone in politics. Her day-to-day leadership, coupled with [press secretary] Ben LaBolt and the talented team already in place, will ensure that we get our campaign message out effectively every single day."

Cutter, a Georgetown law graduate, is a branding specialist who will play a crucial role in defining both the president and his Republican opponent. Cutter was a senior adviser to then-Senator Obama’s 2008 campaign, and was credited with helping improve Michelle Obama’s image, in part by making military families her signature issue.

Officials hope that Cutter’s deep personal and professional ties throughout the West Wing and political Washington will help keep the Chicago operation from becoming isolated from the rest of the party.
Cutter is expected to make the switch between Thanksgiving and Christmas. Her current portfolio includes strategy and message coordination, as deputy to senior adviser David Plouffe.

Cutter was Michelle Obama’s chief of staff during the campaign, then became chief spokesperson for the Obama-Biden Transition. She was a counselor to Treasury Secretary Tim Geithner for the first five months of the administration, then moved to the White House. She eventually became assistant to the president for special projects, before being named Plouffe’s deputy.

The Massachusetts native is a longtime adviser to the Kennedy family, and was communications director of the Kerry-Edwards 2004 campaign.

Cutter’s biography says she was an adviser to Michelle Obama “in the development and launch of the First Lady’s Let’s Move initiative. She also … served as Adviser to the President in overseeing the political and communications strategy around the successful nomination of Supreme Court Justice Sonia Sotomayor. …

“Cutter is also the founder of the The Cutter Media Group, LLC, … and served as a senior strategist for Majority Leader Harry Reid, Senator Edward M. Kennedy, and Senator John Kerry. She held several positions in the Clinton Administration, including Deputy Communications Director for the White House. A graduate of Smith College and the Georgetown University Law Center, Cutter has also served as a lecturer at Harvard University's John F. Kennedy School of Government.”
