NEWARK — A woman was killed and a man seriously injured Thursday night in a shooting in downtown Newark, authorities said.

The shooting occurred near the corner of Broad and Market streets about 8:30 p.m., said Robert Laurino, acting Essex County prosecutor.

At least one bullet pierced the back of the woman, authorities said. The man was shot in the buttocks and was undergoing surgery late tonight at University Hospital, officials said.

The shooting happened in Newark’s business district and less than a block from the Prudential Center, where auditions have been taking place for a new Fox reality TV show.

Officials did not release the victims’ names, but said there was no connection to the TV event. It comes just weeks after the city and The Rock took center stage as it hosted the NCAA East Regional basketball tournament.

"This strikes a blow to what this city stands for and all the progress we are making," Mayor Cory Booker said at a late night press conference, adding "we are going to redouble our efforts to make sure it doesn’t happen" again.

The mayor pleaded with the public to cooperate: "Please help us."

The shooting happened at 8:37 p.m., in front of 799 Broad Street, when several shots were fired into a sidewalk, authorities said. Booker said there were many people on the street at the time.

The woman was a 40-year-old who was pronounced dead on arrival at University Hospital, while the man is in his 30s, officials said, adding that their identities would be released after family is notified.

There were no suspects and no clear motive tonight, and police did not say how the incident happened or if they had any witnesses.

Police ask that anyone with information about this crime call the Department's 24-hour "Crime Stoppers" anonymous tip line at 877 NWK-TIPS (877 695-8477) or NWK-GUNS (877 695-4867).
