IRVINGTON — It was a tale of firefighters and ice today at a local middle school. Dozens of students pelted firefighters with snowballs and ice pellets when they responded to an alarm at University Middle School, said fire officials, who had to call police.

"Guys were on the radio saying ‘we’re getting hit with snowballs and ice pellets,’ Deputy Fire Chief John Tierney said. "It was getting a little out of hand."

When the eight firefighters arrived, hundreds of students from the Myrtle Avenue school were outside because a chemical fire extinguisher was set off in a corridor shortly before 3 p.m., Tierney said.

As they waited for the building to be ventilated, a snowball fight broke out among the students. The firefighters and two firetrucks were involuntarily included when they got there, Tierney said.

Police took statements from the firefighters, the deputy chief said, adding the principal promised disciplinary action.

"There were no injuries and no damage, other than their being disrespectful," Tierney said. Of the firefighters, he noted, "those guys aren’t there to play."Firefighters are bombarded with snowballs, ice pellets by Irvington students | NJ.com
