Photographer: shay dashevsky Organization: UrBANPHOto Title: Down and Out in Tel-Aviv Location: Tel-Aviv, Israel Drug addict on Alenbi Street. During the Day Alenbi Street is a family shopping street. During the night you can find drug addicts begging for money.
As Tel Aviv gets richer there are some who become unfortunate. More than 1,000 homeless people live in Tel Aviv, twice as many as in 2007. Most of the drug addicts live around the central train station in south Tel Aviv.
Abused by authority and surrounded with drugs, crime, and prostitution they are left with little choice but begging for money, living and dying in the streets.
While I lived in Tel Aviv I opened an urban photography club. These are some of my photos taken from around the central train station. This project was the hardest in my career. Most of the homeless people behaved aggressively toward me or were frightened by the camera. I has to try to behave like an old friend so they would feel comfortable being photographed.
My favorite photographer is Bruce Gilden, and I think it's pretty obvious. I use a wide lens, I get as close as I can, I use flash, and most important: I want my subjects to know I am photographing them.
