NEWARK – Two fatal drive-by shootings in Newark that happened within minutes of each other and 4 miles apart early today appear to be unrelated, the Essex County Prosecutor’s Office said.
Both victims were from Newark and both were shot by someone who fired multiple bullets from a passing vehicle, said Katherine Carter, spokeswoman for the prosecutor’s office.
Separately, authorities say a Montclair man who died today from injuries he sustained from a gunshot wound in Newark last week was the victim of a homicide.
All three killings are being investigated and no motives were released. The deaths bring the number of homicides this year in Newark to 47, up from 41 at the same time last year, said Sgt. Ronald Glover, a city police spokesman.
The first shooting was at 12:12 a.m., when someone in a passing car fired at Darryl Davis, 24, who was in his own vehicle on Abbotsford Avenue, Carter said. Davis was taken to University Hospital in Newark, where he was pronounced dead a short time later.
About 15 minutes after Davis was shot, 19-year-old Jaquell Culver was fatally shot as he stood near the corner of Chadwick Avenue and West Runyon Street. He died at the hospital 30 minutes later.
The third victim, Jaquan Edwards, 24, died today at University Hospital.
The Montclair man was brought there on July 26, after being shot on the 50 block of Blum Street.
The Newark police Major Crimes bureau was handling the case, prosecutor’s office investigators are re-interviewing witnesses, she said.
