Homeless man beaten to death in Santa Ana; suspect arrested
A Santa Ana man has been booked on murder charges after he allegedly beat a homeless man to death with his fists, feet and a piece of construction rubble, police said Tuesday.
The slaying occurred after Jorge Alejandro Lopez confronted a group of homeless men Saturday who were talking and drinking near a construction site in the 200 block of South Bristol Street, the Santa Ana Police Department said.
For an unknown reason, the 33-year-old Lopez allegedly punched Marcos Rojo Nieto, 36, who was knocked to the ground. Lopez kicked the fallen man and grabbed a piece of rubble and began smashing the victim in the head and upper body, Cpl. Anthony Bertagna said.
Lopez left the area as Nieto lay on the ground. The other men with Nieto waited more than five hours before they called 911. By then, the victim was not breathing and was pronounced dead at the scene by paramedics, according to Bertagna.
Lopez was arrested Monday by detectives who will forward their findings to the Orange County district attorney's office.
