Carlos Cabrera: a Cuban artist of the mural

Carlos Cabrera Gutierrez was born 1984 in Nueva Gerona, Cuba. He is from the New Wave of Cuban artists which draw on a long tradition of important Academic background and vigorous control of the subject matter in his style.

Cabrera is a Career artist and Professor of Art at the Wilfredo Lam academy on the Island of Youth in Cuba. Like other artists of his generation, he worked his way through many exhibitions and studied the art of ceramics in his early formative years. Working in Cuba, in official exhibitions Professor Cabrera has acheived a large list of awards.He has done a number of shows featuring erotic art and has been influenced by Alexis Leyva Machado,”kcho”, the Caribbean’s most important Contemporary Artist. The “kcho” influence in his drawings and paintings are overtly apparent, Subjects are painted in small dimensions relative to the scene portrayed in the rest of the painting.In his words,”we are very small compared to the grand dimension of our plights and problems of humanity.”

Professor Cabrera’s early works show his command of the subject matter and his ability to draw to perfection. Often, art collectors question if some artists can surpass the talent of a kindergarten student. To illustrate this point, Cabrera’s exhibitions usually include works from an extended time period, his early academic years to the latter “man and his world.” In his art, the viewer realizes that the message is,”this is what I can do but this is what I am all about and like to do…”

Professor Cabrera is a tall dark fellow with an immense knowledge of Caribbean and international art and frequents international symposiums as Kcho’s best friend. His nick name is “el Lobo” or the “Wolf” and he was the subject on the Poster of the recent Art Biennal in Havana along with 20 artists from different countries. His works have been exhibited in Spain where a gallery has sold a particular portrait of his of Cuban leader Fidel Castro smoking a “funny” cigarette for an undisclosed amount.
