The announcement Tuesday of the end of the 40-year marriage of Al and Tipper Gore came as a shock to members of their political circle — and to a political world for whom the Gores posed, for a decade, as an appealing counterpoint to the increasingly troubled, and troubling, marriage of Bill and Hillary Clinton.
Bill Clinton and Al Gore ran as a boyish team in 1992, and their smart, professional wives were central to their generational appeal, which helped make Barbara Bush the last first lady to define herself as a traditional homemaker.
