Sen. Joe Lieberman has only the highest praise for President Barack Obama's handling of the Gen. Stanley McChrystal controversy.

The Connecticut independent, who has often found himself at odds with the administration, said Obama displayed a "decisive show of presidential leadership" in selecting Gen. David Petraeus to replace McChrystal as the top U.S. commander in Afghanistan.

"I think we have just witnessed a historically significant moment in the Obama presidency," Lieberman told MSNBC.

"The president has taken the crisis that was caused by the Rolling Stone article ... and turned it into a decisive show of presidential leadership," Lieberman said. "This was a commander in chief."

Lieberman, who serves on the Armed Services Committee that will have jurisdiction over Petraeus's confirmation to the post, said Obama had chosen "best person possible to replace General McChrystal."

"It's going to lead us to success in Afghanistan," Lieberman said of Obama's decision.Lieberman praises 'historic moment in Obama presidency' - The Hill's Blog Briefing Room
