n March 2010 I traveled to Tegucigalpa, Honduras with a reporter to do several different stories. One of which was gay rights and activism in Honduras. We met activist Jose Zambrano who in the evenings brings condoms to the transsexual prostitutes of Tegucigalpa. We had the opportunity to spend two nights on the street with the girls. Some live full time as women, but for some this is a secret and when not on the street they live as males.
Spending time with the girls is feels like a party for some and work for others. This, one of them told me, "is the only place where I can be me". They chain smoke, and sip cups of amaretto and ginger ale. They dream of being off the street before the street gets them, because this is not a party. As transsexuals in Honduras they are in constant danger of being beaten or killed. There are no pimps here for any of the prostitutes in Honduras, they all work for themselves. In this case that leaves them without any protection. Two nights after we left Tegucigalpa one of the girls that we met (not pictured) was shot three times and killed.
