Hollywood, California (CNN) -- Mo'Nique, who played an abusive mother in "Precious," won best supporting actress at the 82nd annual Academy Awards Sunday night.

In a fierce and memorable acceptance speech, the actress thanked the Academy, "Gone With the Wind" actress Hattie McDaniel "for enduring all that she had to, so that I would not have to" and her husband "for showing me sometimes you have to forego doing what is popular in order to do what is right."

The story of a downtrodden, inner-city teenager also pulled off a mild upset earlier, winning best adapted screenplay over perceived front-runner "Up in the Air."

"I don't know what to say," said visibly moved writer Geoffrey Fletcher, paying tribute to the filmmakers, his two brothers, his mother and father. "I thank everyone," said Fletcher, gasping
