Kevin Says:
Part One of walking in Baltimore…………
Kevin
He has to admit that he is blessed,
Who is he ……..I sorry I forgot the med’s
I mean me………….
Anyway
What a wonderful weekend I had
In Baltimore, Maryland.
I had an opening at the American Visionary Museum, there
Right by the water.
It was amazing weekend.
And not for the reasons you might think.
It was a weekend of good people and company,
Of friendship, exploration And kindness………….I know I sound a bit over wrought.
But I am finding out more and more as I age,
It’s just about honesty,
Not even truth,
You can even lie honestly………………………
Anyway I am going to write this backwards, I will start at the dinner, after the show.
Now shows and me
Are a some times difficult thing,
I love the people, and I love the buildup
But I get burnt out quick
So in a little while, ……………………………..you can always find me outside smoking my pipe or a cig.
Pacing prowling muttering to myself alone in the dark and secure in the knowledge
That people are draining…………..not because they are bad
But because they are people
Anyway
After the show closed most were still partying at the great hall in the museum
The fat ones feet hurt
So I didn’t dare to dance………..I just chilled and enjoyed the vibes
My family left and walked across the street
To Schooners restaurant on the water
Looking out over the harbor.
Both families are there,
My family the Sampson’s and Remolds family
I won’t use their last name to spare them my writing………
Ok I am going backwards
I drove down to Maryland with my best friends Reynolds, husband Raul
And God son Raphael
Reynolds
the first place we stopped was a soul food restaurant in the hood
not my idea, guessed whose........but the food was so damn good....
She is a hoot my friend, my teacher, my nag..
She keeps me in line
Anyway she is originally from Maryland,
She resides in Brooklyn New York now.
She is a great painter, the best teacher i know,
she is the one that took
a dum cop and walked him into the art world
she teaches at two different museum schools in New York.
Having said that she is crazy
And funny and brilliant and full of life
She can bitch with the best of them, is a stanch and I mean stanch
Feminist.
Reynolds made me go to like ten coffee shops to promote
the show, she has always been my promoter, and she makes me
do things better...........gives me that push
very few people can push me
but Reynolds can, and thats why I love her so....
So you know what I do for entertainment……………I throw out right wing non sense
And watch her explode; she is smart and usually right
But I have to try to win.
I torture her with talk of my guns, my aversion to any thing not American
My secret love of any thing George Bush
She screams throws stuff and we laugh until we are howling
We howled all the way to Maryland…………..
Ok so her family was there
They live outside of Baltimore
And came to see my show………
Reynolds was raised here and around
the family home one of the most beautiful houses i
have even been in
Anyway
Reynolds had to leave to catch the train back to New York
Right during the show
She had to teach a class the next day
So she couldn’t come out to eat……….
Ok at the restaurant
It doesn’t matter what was said
Except to say their where many animated conversations
At that table
This table full of people of different colors and backgrounds
Democrat, republicans and others sat here
Do you know why I am blessed because?
My father told me long ago
To always surround yourself with people smarter than yourself
But I will ad one on
Surround yourself with nice people
Good people
People with manners
People who aren’t so full of themselves
That they can’t see around their egos
You can be brilliant and simple
The real bright bulb is truth
And truth is simple
Ok ……………………………..simple…………….read
Looking around this table
I could see just that
Family hard work, friends,
God
Or a good reason for why not…………..
It didn’t hit me until I came home………………..
What America truly could be
Anyway
So we are sitting at this fancy table
And I look around the room,
To my right is Reynolds……………...
Brother drew and his wife Joan
http://theslowcook.blogspot.com/2009/02/were-in-martha-stewart-living.html
These two people have the largest organic farm
In the nation
He is starting and designing new ways of farming
He advises other farmers and is well sort out world wide
But when he spoke he spoke of the hard
Journey that he took too get to this good place
And so many around the table……….nodded their heads
And got it…….
Famous
But you wouldn’t know it
They spoke of the farm humbly
Look I am a black guy
Farms are on television
I come from sharecroppers……….ok
I had now idea how big and famous that Couple was
Until my daughter sent me an article on
Them today
And these are good looking folks……… Reynolds family
They all are handsome
Mother beautiful tall and regal (recently deceased)
Father from the Midwest
Retired…….. Genius ………Doctor, practitioner surgeon
Lecturer……………………
A man who some say helped to put’
Johns Hopkins on the map
But you wouldn’t know it
Elderly,
Funny
In pain from a recent Health bout
No complaints
Only smiles
Next to drew was my Godson
A mix of Reynolds and Raul
Filipino and Caucasian
Too smart
Well mannered
Too handsome
Can hold his own in an adult company
Without wanting like most of the rest
Of young people
To be the center of attention all the time
No I am proud of my Godson
And his parents
They raised this boy right
He is still a boy, still his own person
Funny as hell
And a developing smart ass like his father
A trait that he will find will come in handy in the future
He wants to be some body
Praise the lord
Ok let’s keep going
Ok after
Joan Drew’s wife Joan
Who is nice and warm and friendly
And not scared to talk
I liked her right away
Down to earth
But smart
Smart
And drew lets back track
Drew right next to me
About 6’5” inches tall
I instantly liked him
Reed thin
I was instantly reminded
Of Gary cooper
Or chuck Conner the rifle man
I don’t know
This guy is an America portrait
There is a famous picture
Shown below
Depression era
Of a farmer face wrinkled
Eyes tired
But with head unbowed
There is something in this face
Some thing more
It’s that magical part of America
That one can never really put their finger on
Some thing bigger than the farmer
Anyway
That is what I thought of
Drew famous
Hard working
Dirt under the nails
Smart, genius, unassuming
And most of all nice
Best farm in the land
But you wouldn’t t know it
Onto my –Step sister Sheila,
Beautiful, strong real strong………..she
Has worked at every thing
And has done well at every thing
Works for a big company in pa
Makes great money
And believes In God
No lives with god
Next her
Her husband Johnny
I grew up with him just two doors down
In the city of Elizabeth
He was a nice boy
And he is a nicer man
Full of God and grace
Unassuming
This guy set up and I don’t mean as a flunky
I mean as in charge
Set up communications
For the army
During desert storm
And during the current war
20 years in the National Guard
Retired just recently after a call back
He is an Exe with a tech computer company
I never know which one
In Pa big time
Good money
Nice house
Great wife
Smart smart
And humble
You would never know
What he has seen
Or what he knows
He must have stories to tell
That many of us would die
To hear………..must have pain
But you wouldn’t know it
Next Reynolds father
I mentioned him already
Nice man
Onto my brother in law Keith
Ivy League
Black is proud doctor
Who runs aids clinics in Texas
In the poorest of places
Who lectures and sets up clinics
All around the world
He just returned from South Africa
With my sister
Amazing guy
But you wouldn’t know it
My sister Smith grad
Proud, project manager
Who recently moved to Texas with Keith
After living and working in Dc for years
She still has a home there
Bright I mean as in bright
Funny, sensitive
And my Theo
Next Gran ruby
My step mother
Who is my mother, my best friend and my sister
She is the rock of the family
And after my father died
We all got stronger
She took over and she is the first person
I call for any kind of advice
Kind soft spoken, Christian
Smart smart smart
Runs tax centers
Nursed
And ran her own business
Years ago
The best barbeque in New Jersey
For many years
Business woman
Mother
And at the head of the table
Raul
Reynolds husband
One of the smartest men I know
Tech head to the max
It runs and has a chip he knows about it
But he is also one of the most human people I know
Good man
Reynolds says she married him because
He looks like jimmy smits and you can see that
I can’t say enough about Raul
He drove me here
Never asked for a thing, listened to my madness
For hours
He needs a metal
And last but not least
My daughter Lauren
Annual funds manager at the top art school in the nation
Yes I am proud
Beautiful as hell
Takes after her mother
Smart funny, nice……………
Every time I look at her I wonder where she came from
Then I remember her mother
And I know
She is my best student
Best buddy we call each other several times
A day
Why because we like to talk to each other
Love it
Love her
Then me the hero
All decked out in my father’s suit jacket
With a pair of pants from ABC discount store
And a tie I brought in the museum store
And you know what
I looked good and it was me
And Kevin found his grove years ago
And through it away
Artist moment in the sun
But you wouldn’t know it
All these people
Talking
Laughing
Exchanging life stories
No pain
Every one is hurting
People around this table
Had lost love ones
And money
And more
But you know what
You wouldn’t know it
It was Middle America
Meets northern elite
And starving poor me
And we met in the middle
Bonded by our survival of hard times
And by our understanding of the need for good ones
I was amazed at how long these two families got along
They became mine real quick
It was the American family the real one
One were even though you are right
And you are left
We can hang
I sound like I sound sing we shall over come
Or kumbia
But I mean it
We are all not so different
And no matter what you do
If you remain humble by your success
And spread it around as every one at that table had
That you will prosper
Through friendship and the education that diverse
Exp. Provides
This moved me more than any thing
I began to understand the two America
I began to understand values
Republicans aren’t wrong
We aren’t right
We just have to learn to be tolerant
Of each other
America can fix itself
But you wouldn’t know it
the next day i went to drews farm
and it was a life changing experience.
Drew and Raul
my cute daughter checking out the crops
and the best part of the whole trip
