Fire Lou Dobbs

Latinos, immigrants, and others have, for a long time now, put up with the hateful lies of Lou Dobbs. Using the platform that CNN provides him every night, Dobbs has crossed the line far too many times. His actions have now triggered a backlash that is growing in the United States and throughout Latin America.
For years, almost on a daily basis, Dobbs has relentlessly attacked immigrants. In this pursuit, his disdain for Latinos and immigrants is as evident as his contempt for the facts.
For Dobbs, "illegal aliens" are responsible for an increase in leprosy cases in the United States. False. For Dobbs, the US Hispanic Chamber of Commerce is mixed up with drug cartels. Also false. In Dobbs's world it is perfectly acceptable to use his CNN web page to raise money in support of hard-line anti-immigration ordinances. This is outrageous, and all of it is presented to Americans under the banner of CNN, "The Most Trusted Name in News."
Dobbs has promoted the "reconquista" conspiracy theory that immigrants are scheming to reclaim parts of the US for Mexico. After displaying a "reconquista" graphic, produced by the supremacist group the Council of Conservative Citizens, "Lou Dobbs Tonight" was forced to apologize for its appallingly scurrilous source. A CNN spokesperson described the action as "regrettable."
But the truth is that Dobbs does not think twice about working with white supremacists. Dobbs supports the Federation for American Immigration Reform (FAIR), an organization he describes as credible. This ironically dubbed group was founded by the nationalist and xenophobe John Tanton, who currently still serves on FAIR's board of directors. According to the Southern Poverty Law Center, for nine years FAIR was financed by the Pioneer Fund, a group that was once described by eugenics expert Barry Mehler as a "neo-Nazi organization."
Representatives from FAIR, as well as representatives from other groups that Tanton has spawned, are regularly featured on Dobbs's show. In this manner, Dobbs is working to legitimate groups that present themselves as having standardly conservative views on immigration, when at heart they are motivated by a vision of defending white America against the "invasion" of immigrants.
This calls into question the credibility of "The Most Trusted Name in News." What responsibility does CNN bear for allotting the best hour of its programming to a promoter of hate? Would the network allow members of the KKK to come on the air and seriously discuss matters of importance to the African-American community? Would they allow Holocaust-deniers to speak as experts on Jewish affairs?
It is no coincidence that while Dobbs and other "experts" have been spewing their venomous lies and distortions from their pulpit, there has been a dramatic rise in the number of hate crimes committed against Hispanic immigrants. Hate crimes against Latinos - the crimes that have been reported, that is - have increased by 40 percent in the past five years.
The very lives of Latino immigrants are in danger. In Suffolk County, Long Island, immigrants are routinely attacked, beaten and spat upon, and law enforcement officials sit back and do little about it.
Presente.org and other organizations are calling on CNN to pull Dobbs off the air. Presente.org is spearheading this campaign not only to counter Dobbs's toxic propaganda, but also to preserve the dignity and ensure the security of Hispanics.
Presente.org is mobilizing people in major cities across the United States and launching an educational campaign in Latin America, where CNN has decided not to air Dobbs's program.
CNN has benefited from Dobbs's notoriety. It is a marketing strategy, it seems, to improve their ratings among xenophobes at the expense of Hispanics and immigrants. Organized resistance to this disgrace has been slow in coming, and now is the time that CNN does the right thing.

Dobbs is just one more
Mon, 10/19/2009 - 20:16 — Harry Thomas (not verified)Dobbs is just one more reprehensible "commentator" in a slew of them, all looking for ratings. CNN is no different than Fox, or MSNBC, or right-wing radio. They put the reprehensible commentators in prime time because that's what sells ads and brings ratings; pandering to the lowest common denominator. Of course, everyone else not tuned to the cable news channels is watching the latest freak show called "reality television." Good luck with your protest, but if the Moral Majority and its successors couldn't clean up television to fit their notions of decency, I have to believe that the odds are against you as well.
You should mention that
Mon, 10/19/2009 - 20:34 — Anonymous (not verified)You should mention that Dobbs is married to a lady born in Mexico. Dobbs opposes mass illegal immigration, and since most are Mexican citizens, it seems he criticizes their illegal behavior. This is not racism, but calling Dobbs a racist makes the author one. BYW, mass illegal immigration benefits the rich and hurts the poor.

Mon, 10/19/2009 - 21:31 — Anonymous (not verified)Thanks 20:38 - I also googled Lou Dobbs and he is married to a Mexican-American. I happen to agree with him re illegal immigration mostly for safety reasons. I quit watching him earlier this year because he is extremely crabby some days. So the author is very much upset about Dobbs for the wrong reasons.

Mon, 10/19/2009 - 22:22 — Mike in NYC (not verified)The purest expression of "hate" is expecting Whites to passively accept eventual minority status in a nation founded by Europeans. Bloody revolutions have been waged over less, which is why I'm surprised there has been as little anti-invader violence as there has been.

Mon, 10/19/2009 - 22:39 — An (not verified)Except for a small number of Native-Americans, we are all immigrants or decedents thereof. Most of us are "legal". But what makes us "legal" is the immigration laws passed in our more recent history. The first immigration laws were passed to prohibit the Chinese workers "Shanghaied" here to build the railroads in the 19th century from becoming citizens or bringing their families over, and, yes, they were racist. Since then these immigration laws have multiplied, as our government decided who were "good" people to let in. Among these "good" people, as an example were NOT the Jews whose fate was predetermined by Nazi Germany, but sealed by our anti-immigration policies. The Statue of Liberty is dishonored by those who decide who shall be admitted and who shall not be admitted. Mexican "illegals" would not be illegal if we believed the Declaration of Independence, "that all men are created equal" and did not add our caveat, that we decide some are not as equal as others.
Two things -- the illegal
Mon, 10/19/2009 - 22:43 — Anonymous (not verified)Two things -- the illegal immigration screamers are ranting for the wrong reasons. You want to stop illegal immigration? Go after the companies that HIRE them. Fine them heavily. VERY heavily. Of course, then the poor you say are hurt by illegals being here will have to be willing to work for near-slave wages in agribusiness, picking everything we grow... and in other extremely low-paying, often dangerous and/or grueling jobs. Second, when paid ranters like Dobbs stir up outrage, it spills out onto the streets with no discernment between illegal and legal aliens. There is no differentiation. Do you think attackers stop and ask for a green card, or proof of citizenship before they assault someone for the color of their skin? One last thing... if you want to change the way CNN does business, you're going to have to go after the companies that buy ads, and make sure they KNOW you're after them.... in very large numbers. If a million hispanics notified, say, Toyota, that they wouldn't buy Toyota vehicles as long as they support folks like Dobbs, they just might reconsider.
Big deal he has a Mexican
Mon, 10/19/2009 - 22:44 — fred fep (not verified)Big deal he has a Mexican wife. Do you realize how many illegals come here from the UK? Why is he only concerned with Spanish-speaking? This issue is hardly so cut and dried. It does help the "rich" but the jobs these people do are not done by others because they pay substandard wages, house them in horrid conditions and make them pay for almost everything so they make hardly anything. This is mostly an excuse to not improve migrant worker conditions. It would cost a fortune and be counter-productive (as it is proving, how much fruit and veggies rotted last year in California due to this nonsense?)
Being married to a Mexican
Mon, 10/19/2009 - 23:46 — Anonymous (not verified)Being married to a Mexican doesn't make him any less racist. For all we know his wife might be ashamed of being Mexican. I can't tell you how many Latinos are ashamed of being Latinos so they try to be white. With people like Dobbs, it makes them want suppress their Latino roots even more. The bottom line is that he is knowingly spreading lies and is targeting a specific group of people. It's fine if you don't like immigration, but for God's sake report REAL FACTS so people are not making decisions while being ignorant of the truth. If CNN cannot report the truth, who will?!

Tue, 10/20/2009 - 00:20 — Midwest Tom (not verified)Here in the Midwest Dobbs is well received, he does not downgrade Latinos, just illegals. Remember that Harry Truman forced 12 million Mexicans out of this country, so returning GI's could find work. It may be time to repeat that exercise so legal citizens can find work.

Tue, 10/20/2009 - 02:06 — PC Coker (not verified)the Western world from Europe to America is being over run with a tidal wave of illegal immigrants from third world countries fleeing rotten despotic governments and economic systems. they are being aided and abetted by main stream media especially National Public Radio, the television networks, and leading print media to increase their ratings. With them they bring crime, a heavy demand for health and education services while over running neighborhoods with over stuffed housing. All this so the rich can have $10/hour maids and gardeners while the taxpayer pays for the services they demand. I am not a follower of Lou Dobbs but he is the only part of the main stream media giving some balance to this debate. Remove him and all you will have is one side of the debate which seems what the left wing wants across the media spectrum. If you can't meet his arguments with better ones of your own then you are showing the weakness of your position. Freedom of the press is one of the main stays of the US Bill of Rights. Calling for a silencing of part of the media is nothing but Gestapo/Nazism. It is time for these people to return home and take up arms to liberate their countries just as our ancestors did in 1776. After all the tree of liberty is watered with the blood of freedom lovers. PCC

Tue, 10/20/2009 - 02:44 — Anonymous (not verified)There is a very big difference between a criticism of mass illegal immigration, for safety or any of a dozen other aspects, and the blatantly false, hate-mongering, xenophobic garbage spewed by Dobbs. This is another fine example of the right-wing's inability to actually have a discussion based on reality. If you genuinely have a beef, then let's hear it. If you have to generate lies to get your point across, then you don't have much of a point at all. You have a mental issue.

Tue, 10/20/2009 - 04:55 — Anonymous (not verified)I have a better idea... Let's fire ALL of Cable News until there is a Truth in Broadcasting Law with teeth, a New and better Fairness Doctrine in Media, and then force the few Global Corporate Media Empires which own almost all media in America, including the 24/7 Newz Speculation and Comment Machines, to break up into little itty bitty pieces by selling off their ownership and control of their multiple blocks of America Media such as Major Newspapers, Print Publishing Companies, Radio Stations, Local Metro Broadcast TV stations and Cyber Spaces to Hundreds of New, Different, Separate and Diverse Ownerships, thus eliminating their chronic, ongoing almost absolute psychotic control of Governments, local, state and federal and any National Debates and Discussions, as well as their control and dominance over too many of the pathways for Speech and monopoly-like ownership of Our once supposed Free Press... All in all--- its time to end the super duper Concentrations of Wealth and Power within all facets of America that the Great Reagan-Republican Hoodwinking known as 'Less and Less and Less Government (of the People)' has brought US...

Tue, 10/20/2009 - 09:28 — Pat Williams (not verified)When commentators like Lou Dobbs tell lies and repeat them ad nauseum, they should not be protected and promoted by cable networks. What amazes me is that there is now a move afoot to paint all commentators with the same brush, even those who make every effort to speak the truth and are willing to make corrections if they learn that they are wrong. I am specifically referring to Olbermann and Maddow. It isn't the differences of opinion that are objectionable. It is whether the commentator is striving for accuracy and fairness.

You learn even more reading
Tue, 10/20/2009 - 13:05 — Anonymous (not verified)You learn even more reading the comments than the article. People use their version of the facts to support their point of view and including advocate for their values good and bad. This is why we have laws and CNN has a hierarchical news department. The problem is we don't punish law breakers, there are no consequences for breaking the rules especially the powerful. In fact lies and destructive controversy are making careers. Owners and department heads don't corral their employees on air like Dobbs who should be fact checked and held to a higher standard. We let people off who break the rules and we create an environment of self indulgence where people who say anything they want. Because they make money. Bottom line it's too true that money talks. American ideals are in the waste basket. The powerful usually get what they want and suffer no consequences for breaking the rules. It's this way from the top down. The message of this real world fact is get what you can get away with and to hell with everyone else. To change this we have to make people pay for their ethical indulgence. We don't.
I don't watch Dobbs but I do
Tue, 10/20/2009 - 13:11 — Anonymous (not verified)I don't watch Dobbs but I do have some comments that are relevant to the issue of illegal immigration. First let it be acknowledged that the USA allows more legal immigration than the rest of the world combined. Second illegal immigration has a significant, benficial economic impact on this country particularly in controlling inflation and stemming the flight of jobs overseas. Third lets admit that no matter how nice they sound, the words on the Statue of Liberty are just words, they are not law. Finally let us realize that this countries immigration laws have always, and should continue to benefit this country just as other countries rules and laws benefit those countries. Allowing unrestricted immigration while at the same time providing social support programs that did not exist during the hey day of so called free immigration would be tantamount to committing national suicide!
They established a system
Tue, 10/20/2009 - 14:44 — Anonymous (not verified)They established a system called E-Verify to make it difficult to work illegally. This works great and has opened jobs for millions of poor U.S. citizens. As a result, the Corporate sponsors of the Democratic Congress just got the Senate to vote to kill the program. Meanwhile, billionaires have a good laugh when so called liberals support mass illegal immigration, which result in all the low wage and poor working conditions some worry about. If illegals were not around to take these jobs, they'd be forced to boost wages.

Tue, 10/20/2009 - 15:36 — Anonymous (not verified)If you think we have an immigration problem now, just wait until much of Mexico begins to suffer mega-droughts, the Amazon turns into tundra, and the glaciers that supply water to Lima dry up because of global warming. The global temperature will not have to go up much before these things could happen. Around the same time, the U.S. will begin to have mega-droughts in the southwest, and the great plains will begin to turn back into a desert. Then it will be Americans who will be trying to get into Canada because food will be too expensive for most people. Will you still be against illegal immigration when it is you who are trying to escape from a life of suffering and poverty? It will be very interesting to see what happens.
Just so you all are clear.
Tue, 10/20/2009 - 15:36 — Anonymous (not verified)Just so you all are clear. When he was ruining GE, Jack Welsh hired Rush Limbaugh's news director to revive MSNBC. The act of reviving was to mix entertainment with diatribe under the banner of news. Then this guy was moved to CNN. Fox hired the guy where he remains today. So there should be no surprises when you look at the miserable collection of bigoted loudmouths so much in evidence at these three operations; they were spawned form the same perverted and perverse seed.
PC Coker is correct. The
Tue, 10/20/2009 - 18:56 — CounselorTroi (not verified)PC Coker is correct. The ultra-liberals and the "la raza" activists want to shut up Dobbs because he tells the truth about illegal immigration and its increasingly serious effects on our society. They only want one side of the story to get out; can't have that Dobbs fellow over there letting people know just how overrun we are with illegal aliens. Dobbs is no more anti-Latino than he is any other illegal immigrant group. It just happens that the vast majority of illegal aliens ARE Latino. The Pew Hispanic Center (hardly a hotbed of anti-Latino rhetoric) has issued a study showing that about 57% of all illegal aliens are Mexican; about 24% are other Latin Americans; and the rest (about 19%) are from all the rest of the world combined. Sorry, liberals, but our illegal immigration problem is largely Latino and mostly Mexican. That's not racism, to acknowledge a simple, quantifiable fact. Dobbs is not a racist, although he can be rather grumpy from time to time. FAIR is not a racist organization either: it wants to put limits on all immigration. Don't like that idea? Do you really want our population to jump to half a billion in the next 30-40 years? Most of our population growth is directly or indirectly due to immigration. We need to act in our own best interests, not those of people who want to come here. We need to hang "No Vacancy" signs on all the borders, IMO. Keep it up Lou! We need your dissenting voice to counter the PC pablum the MSM is constantly feeding us.

There is nothing high minded or high class about giving crooks free benefits, only lunacy...
I like Lou Dobbs and I don't
Tue, 10/20/2009 - 19:32 — Anonymous (not verified)I like Lou Dobbs and I don't want illegal immigrants in my country. However, the time is almost upon us when both legal and illegal immigrants will have no incentive to move to America because there will be a severe financial depression thanks to the banking cartels and corruption at the highest levels of the U.S. government. This topic (Lou Dobbs) is not important when you consider the state of world economies. World War 3 is a very real possibility in the near future as well.
I really don't know where
Tue, 10/20/2009 - 20:51 — Anonymous (not verified)I really don't know where people get the idea that illegal aliens take jobs away from willing citizens. i have worked in the landscape industry in houston texas for over a decade and i can tell you that we paid our illegals (they all had the right paperwork and I.D. but..) better than minimum wage. if they had any real landscape skills or english or a driver's license, they could make up to twice the minimum wage within a matter of years. we advertised everywhere and anywhere we could think of. no one but hispanics ever applied for the work. no white people ever even called to inquire about the foreman positions advertised in the main newspaper, much less entry positions. It there was a white guy on the crew you know it's some owner's relative that needs a job. No blacks ever apply for the work either. Nobody but the hispanics wants to do physical work outside in 100+ temperatures with heat indexes over 110 of the Houston summers. Last week my thermometer hit a humid 95 in the shade in mid-october, with a heat index over 100.
I agree, illegal aliens
Tue, 10/20/2009 - 22:23 — AllAmerican male (not verified)I agree, illegal aliens should not be glorified at all. Does Mexico have a lobby fighting for the rights of ILLEGAL immigrants crossing the border there? Does France have lobby groups for illegal immigrants to their country? Forgive me for not caring about the “social stigma” associated with being a criminal. There is a correct way to enter this country, and it is legal, it may be tedious, but so is the speed limit sometimes. Follow the rules and quit whining about the rights of criminals!

Wed, 10/21/2009 - 14:32 — SmokeyWC (not verified)Although I don’t always agree with him, I happen to like Lou Dobbs. I enjoy someone whose viewpoint reflect the ever shrinking middle-class of America. Like the rest of the cable TV talking heads he is prone to embellishment and fictitious stories. But why is when a white man stands up against illegal immigration he is branded racist? The fallacy of diversity is a lie sold to us by the liberal elite. The vast majority of people in the world are socio/ethno-centric; that is to say the group to together with people like themselves. All these people crying out for the rite of illegal immigrants, rarely live in the same communities as them, let alone send their children to the same school systems. Truthfully, illegal immigrants stick to their communities, just as other ethnic group stick to closely to their own. This is not diversity, this self-segregation. America is falling apart, and now millions of non-Americans with unmerited senses of self-entitlement are crying out for rights they do not deserve. If you are overly concerned about losing your ethnic roots, do yourself a favor, stay planted where you are. Speaking fluent English is a big plus. I have lived in foreign countries before. I learned their language and their customs. It’s called respect of a host country. Most recent immigrants, illegal or not have none. They chose to imprint their little piss-ant 3rd world life on the rest of us, which only inspire hate. Quite simply if your only desire to come to America is economic go home; likewise to all those, whose cultural and /or religious ideals violate American Laws.

Wed, 10/21/2009 - 15:46 — Anonymous (not verified)I think most folks know and understand the difference between illegal immigrants, and legal ones. The problem is that legal immigrants, perhaps ones who don't have their citizenship papers yet, get lumped in with illegals, the stigma and persecution knows no boundary. The issue seems to me to be Lou Dobbs contributing to a stigma for ALL immigrants, not just illegals. And so he's a legitimate problem. Race issues are sensitive, and Lou Dobbs isn't exactly a sensitive guy. But those working on behalf of exploited and persecuted immigrants are not wrong. The post that claims Morris Dees is a parasite is lacking in any credible reference. It no doubt stems from the fact he's a lawyer, but there are many different kinds of lawyers, so once again, seriously lacking. You can always tell the right wing posts here: loopy, xenophobic, repressed, with violence mixed in. Cheers.

Wed, 10/21/2009 - 17:49 — Anonymous (not verified)I don't really follow Dobbs, but the couple of times that I heard him speak about immigration issues I had to agree with him. (Please! I was not witness to any of his purportedly racist claims). Here's the situation as I see it. There are the more important issues of overriding issues of population growth and the environmental damage. Immigration, legal or otherwise, is responsible for all of this nation's net population growth since the early 70's. This is a trend that should not continue. Immigration, legal or otherwise, should be curtailed immediately. I am not a bigot. My wife is part Mexican. I love Hispanics. But I'd love them more if they would stay in their own countries and improve their lives there rather than here. BTW, I am of Irish descent and I support the deportation of illegal Irish immigrants as well. We should allow the immigration only of exceptional individuals who have unique skills that we require. Certainly not unskilled labor!

Wed, 10/21/2009 - 22:42 — AnonymousDV (not verified)Good point 17:49 - the population growth that has occurred in my lifetime (65 years) is appalling and clearly is the route cause of many, if not all of our problems. I am particularly alarmed that more people do not realize this fact. What the wold needs is a stable (and smaller) population. I'm afraid if humans can't achieve this intentionally then Nature will see to it in ways that our so called science will not anticipate.

Thu, 10/22/2009 - 15:20 — Anonymous (not verified)Honestly, most of the illegal immigrants that enter the US do so legally: they overstay their visas. I currently reside in Ireland and it seems to be a common think for the Irish to go over to the US and overstay their legally allowed time period by several years. Of course they're white so who cares right? To say that Lo Dobbs has a problem with illegal immigrants is erroneous then. He has a problem with Hispanic illegal immigrants. Racism.

Clearly, a racist, anti-white agenda was now dictating policy. Of course, if you thought the previous situation was racist, you'd consider the current policy "just." I guess it all depends on whether you fancy living in a First World or an up-and-coming Third World country.
He can be taken off the air
Thu, 10/22/2009 - 19:29 — Anonymous (not verified)He can be taken off the air but the problem of massive illegal immigration remains. American citizens are enraged and want illegals deported and our borders protected. We have immigration laws for a reason. Our treasonous "representatives" tow the globalist line of open borders and ignore Article IV, Section 4 of our Constitution. There is going to be hell to pay before it's over with.
