John O'Boyle/The Star-LedgerJerod Wise is arraigned at the Essex County Courthouse in Newark. He is charged in the death of Curtis Johnson, who was fatally stabbed at the intersection of Broad and Market Streets in Newark.
NEWARK -- A Newark man pleaded not guilty today to the fatal stabbing last week of an East Orange man on one of Newark's busiest streets in front of horrified pedestrians.
Jerod Wise, 26, appeared before Superior Court Judge Michael Petrolle on charges of murder, unlawful possession of a weapon, and possession of a weapon for an unlawful purpose for the Sept. 8 slaying of Curtis Johnson, 22, according to Essex County Assistant Prosecutor William Neafsey.
Dressed in a tan-colored button-down shirt, Wise calmly stared ahead with his hands cuffed behind his back as his assigned public defender, Sterling Kinsale, stood next to him.
Wise is accused of killing Johnson in front of a clothing store on Broad Street at 3:25 p.m., authorities said. Johnson staggered to a nearby bus station on Market Street and collapsed in a pool of blood.
The fatal stabbing apparently stemmed from a dispute the previous night.
A day later, authorities found Wise at his sister's home on Huntington Terrace, where he surrendered.
