The mayor of New Jersey's largest city says a rash of shootings on one day there shows more work must be done to reduce gun violence.
Police in Newark say three people were shot dead and seven others were wounded in three unrelated shooting incidents Monday.
Homicides and shootings are down over the last few years in Newark, which has about 280,000 residents. But Mayor Cory Booker says the level of violence is unacceptable.
Police Director Garry McCarthy says his department is following strong leads in the two fatal shootings.
In one, gunfire from a car killed a 35-year-old woman and injured four others in the South Ward section. A few hours later, two men were killed and one was wounded as they sat on a stoop near a highway.
