Reflections on D-Day by Ron Nitti

Relections on D-Day by Ron N.
The first time I watched "Saving Private Ryan"
all I could think about was my Dad
and how he maintained his sanity
He landed in France, Germany, and Italy
And lived
Fought
and came home
I could never imagine the horror
He lived through
101 st airborne
Paratrooper
Private Lou Nitti
He never looked back
Never asked the VA for help
He just moved on with his life
He still waiting for his parade
He did talk about the fun and crazy times he had over sea
The laughs he shared and the "crap game" he won
About a man he met there and are still close friend today
About how he and his buddies toward the end of it all
Controlled the food, motor pool and the BX
Imagine a PFC has his own jeep standing by
Parked outside the PX
The wild parties they threw
On a weekend pass in France
That will never be matched
Drinking champagne and Cognac
From tin cups
Meeting my Mom in service
Falling in love and staying married for almost 60 years
That's all we new about the war
And the fact he'd break my legs to keep me out of it
Our family gave enough
What ever secrets he has
He will never say
Except how scared he was when the fighting started
And how there were no atheists on the battle field
I salute the troops from all the wars
I stand proud when I hear the Star Spangle Banner
I give thanks to those that paid ultimate price
So I can enjoy the freedoms
That we have in this country
D-Day
We should never forget
We should pay homage to those great men
I hope I live long enough to see a time without war
