Well Reynolds and I just finished hanging the show………..Close to the Edge.
It was a trip. The beautiful thing about curating this show was that from the very beginning.
I, we wanted to involve every one in the many aspects of curating. I particularly y wanted to curate these past two shows, as a way of letting my immediate group of artist know.
That it is what it is.
Curating is hard, but achievable
I know that this was a small show to start out with …….but it was a great learning exp.
And artist
Let me say some thing to you guys, stop being so difficult.
I have a theory that I live by
No one is better than any one else. I am no better than any guy working at any gas station in
I simply wanted to remove the mystical preconceptions of curating, so that others in the future could possibly endeavor in this. Some of the artist benefited deeply and learned along with me.
I had the wonderful luxury of knowing so many in the art world with great curatorial sensibilities, so to be honest if I got stuck; I just had to pick up the phone.
What is this show close to the edge really about.
It’s about paying tribute to people who happen to be artist. Who talk the talk and walk the walk. Most if not all, of these artist are or were heavily involved in their communities. Some are icons, Like Danny Simmons, and Jerry Gant, who are both trail blazers in their respective endeavors. Some are teachers who have dedicated their lives to youth. One is a janitor who took it upon his self to save as much of African American history as he could get his hands on. As well as being one of the early artist that influenced so many now well known artist who hailed from Newark New Jersey.
Close to the edge,
It says it is about breaking down barriers between self taught and taught.
Ok
But as its curator it was more about showing good work that hails from people who either are or soon will be “classics”.
It was about breaking down the barriers that exist between the art classes, between the classes that exist between people of color. I was stunned in some cases by artist who refused to show with self taught or street artist. As if by showing with them it would rub off on their art careers and damage them some how. Let me tell you, it’s your loss…
There is never any kind of dishonor in showing with good work and good people, so it’s your loss.
This show
And hopefully it’s about letting people see and know that good art is good art.
Regardless of some ones degrees or lack there of... Obama election is striving to break down its own barriers, and this fight should be fought in the trenches or the streets,
The senate and the schools.
This show is just the beginning
In any case I hope I see some of you at the opening this Sunday
At the Corridor gallery in
Cheers
