South Bronx Is America's Poorest District

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, Rep. Jose Serrano’s 16th Congressional District in the South Bronx is the poorest district in the entire nation. Thirty-eight percent of the district’s residents, totaling 256,544 people, are living below the poverty line; and 49 percent of children in the district are living in poverty. “(The district) has always had poor people,” Serrano said. “It’s a reflection of a lot of things, and the bad economic times have driven a lot of things up.” [NYDN]
