NEWARK — An explosion of gunfire left two men dead in Newark’s South Ward tonight, according to the Essex County Prosecutor’s Office.

The shootings erupted around 10:15 p.m. outside a bar near Concord Street and the 300 block of Sherman Avenue, said Anthony Ambrose, chief of detectives for the prosecutor’s office.

Both victims were taken to University Hospital, where they were pronounced dead a short time after they were shot, Ambrose said.

The victims’ identities were withheld pending notification of their families. The killings appear to be targeted shootings, Ambrose said.

At the crime scene , police officers swarmed the neighborhood, consisting largely of a collection of boarded-up warehouses and row house apartments. They erected floodlights to illuminate the area as they searched for evidence.

A small group of area residents descended on the scene as word of the shootings spread through the community.

The shootings come after the bloodiest summer in Newark since 1990, with 35 people killed between June 1 and Aug. 31.

The Prosecutor’s Office did not immediately identify a motive for the shootings tonight.

Staff Writer Rohan Mascarenhas contributed to this report.
