NEWARK — Despite the help of a good Samaritan who rushed him to a hospital, an 18-year-old Elizabeth man died early this morning after being shot in Newark’s South Ward, authorities said.
Jevon Hector was shot once on Lyons Avenue around 12:30 a.m. today and was pronounced dead shortly after 5 a.m. at University Hospital in Newark, said Katherine Carter, spokeswoman for the Essex County Prosecutor’s Office.
The 18-year-old was shot once while walking along Lyons Avenue with another man, whose identity was withheld, Carter said. The second man flagged down a passing car moments after Hector was shot and asked the driver to take the teen to a hospital, said Carter.
The driver, whose identity was also withheld, took Hector to Beth Israel Hospital in Newark, where, Carter said, he was rushed into surgery. But after a four-and-a-half-hour struggle, Hector was pronounced dead at 5:01 a.m., she said.
Investigators do not know how Hector was shot, and did not release an exact location where the crime took place, saying only he was shot somewhere on Lyons Avenue. Carter said the Newark Police Department and the Prosecutor’s Office were not aware of the shooting until notified by Beth Israel. It was also unclear if either Hector’s associate or the driver of the car that took him to the hospital had called 911.
Information about a motive or a suspect in the slaying were not immediately available, according to Carter. Attempts to reach Hector’s family tonight were not successful.
